Foil stamping is the application of metallic or color pigmented foil onto a label. The foil is transferred with heat and pressure and is widely used in the wine industry especially.

Embossing on the other hand involves raising a logo, design or pattern in the label stock. Two dies are used for this process; a raised one and a recessed one referred to as a male/female die set. The dies fit into each other and when pressure is applied created a raised embossed image or background on the label.

Often the embossed area is also foiled but the embossing may be registered on top of printed copy or it could be what is referred to as a blind emboss, which is a more subtle effect. Embossing adds a three dimensional effect, with different depths of embossing on the label. As an example, a bird could be embossed and contain very fine detail and depth or a linen type pattern could be embossed into a portion or the whole label.

Benefits of Foil Stamping and Embossing

Foil and emboss on a label adds a perceived sense of “value” and is also aesthetically pleasing as well as eye catching and adds a “touch of class” to any product. Embossing gives the label depth and “feel” and also sends the message that this product’s quality is above the average…more in a premium line. The added investment should pay off when it reaches the store shelf. Besides metallic foils in various shades and the pigmented colors, there are also holographic foils or opaque white which might be used on a full dense black label combined with an embossed design.
Common Applications for Foil Stamping and Embossing

Creative Labels provides foil and embossing for several markets; the primary one being the wine industry. Some spirits also incorporate foil on their labels as well as bath and body products, nutraceuticals and fancy, specialty food products. Labels could be foiled and embossed to be used by high end stores on their gift wrap or to seal the tissue wrap as well. These are only a few of the applications.
